Access Office Information
The Access Office run an umbrella programme, known as the Mentor Leadership Programme. By volunteering for any of the opportunities below, you will be part of the programme and receive a certificate and the end of the year, on completion of you voluntary placement.
E-Mentoring
E-mentoring has been shown to increase young people’s motivation for studying. Mentors will act as positive role models for students. Our E-mentoring programme aims to demystify “Oxford”, as well as giving mentees an opportunity to learn more about academic and student life at Oxford. As an E- Mentor you will provide advice and encouragement, regarding academic choices and applying to higher education. E-Mentoring is done through a secure online E-Mentoring program. Full training is provided in November.
Exploring Oxford
This is a one-day outreach programme for younger students. Each day will introduce the students to higher education, particularly Oxford, through a series of academic and personal development sessions. As a volunteer you will participate in question and answer sessions about student life at Oxford, run activities as well as showing students and teachers around Oxford. Full training will be provided in November.
Student Academic Reps (STARS)
his project is based in local schools. You will deliver workshops and talks about Higher Education and Oxford. You will volunteer in pairs and a member of staff from the University will accompany you to the local school. Full training will be provided in November.
Modern Foreign Language mentors (MFL)
This project is aimed at Year 11 pupils who could benefit from support with modern languages and who have been identified as potential underachievers. There is a focus on the GCSE syllabus; primarily there is an emphasis on raising attainment with regards to speaking skills. Listening and reading skills are also an important element. Full training will be provided in January.
Oxford Young Ambassadors
This programme works with a group of young people from state schools across England for 4 years (we see them 3-4 times a year). They will be the first generation in their family to attend university. By volunteering with them, you will increase their confidence in their academic abilities, as well as help them to communicate the message of higher education to their peers and community. Full training will be provided in November.
Looked After Children (LAC)
This programme works with young people in care throughout Oxfordshire for a sustained period of two years – Year 10 through to the end of Year 11 – and will offer a full compliment of academic, social, motivational and aspirational activities. These include masterclasses, activity days, a residential as well as volunteer-led sessions. Volunteers will work with the young people to raise aspirations and confidence, to set short- and long-term goals, and to develop life and learning skills. Full training will be provided in Michaelmas Term.
